Conversions
Showing who you are. Making innovation visible with interior design. Conversions of existing hotels, restaurants or wellness areas help hospitality businesses to attract new guests, sharpen the corporate identity and strengthen the brand internally. It is always an exciting task to develop ideas for future generations and to take companies to the next level in terms of design.
For conversions and extensions of existing hotels, restaurants and wellness areas, I will concentrate in the future on the planning steps defined as service phases 1-4: Basic work, preliminary design and draft. This is where my conceptual and design strengths lie, and this is also where the foundation for economically and ecologically sustainable planning is laid.
The supervision of the executive implementation (LPH 5-9) is possible in cooperation with partners from my expert network, which I have built up over 20 years, for selected projects.
RESTAURANT MAVERICKS, HOTEL VIENNA HOUSE BERLIN:
HOT SPOT FOR RELAXED SURF ‘N’ TURF
Interior design is more than surface. It creates atmosphere, optimizes room structures and processes, and is a relevant factor for economic efficiency.
The restaurant struggled with spatial, structural and atmospheric issues: the small floor plan offered too little seating space to be profitable, and the fully tiled seven-foot ceiling height looked sober instead of conveying the relaxed charm of California Kitchen.
Almost everything is new: The steel gallery makes use of the height, creates seating with a great view and structures the space (striking and flexible playable: the light shelf). Wood panels and exposed brickwork in brickhouse style partially clad the floor-to-ceiling tiled walls – the casual factor is enhanced by graffiti and skateboard decorations. Wooden floor and counter were preserved, refreshed and accentuated with colorful tiles. The new Maverick, with massive wooden tables and long benches, clearly suggests, “Come together and enjoy your meal!” The conversion was completed in a short time while the hotel continued to operate.

Eggerwirt Spa: Dive into a relaxing feeling of well-being
How tight budgets challenge creativity to consistently prioritize and define sustainability as a relevant variable in the design process.
Characterized by the vintage charm of days gone by, the spa area no longer met the visual requirements of an elegant wellness resort. At the same time, there was a lot of substance worth preserving that needed to be rebuilt in a way that was resource-efficient but effective in terms of financial and time budgets.
Although the design had to be based on the given floor plan including tiled floor, a timeless modern ambience was created with high-quality materials (real wood, textured wallpaper, high-quality textiles) and stylish furnishings. Many visible surfaces and the loose furnishings of the natural-colored interior, in which cool shades of green and blue provide elegant contrasts, were also renewed.

Vienna House Easy: Interior branding for an entire hotel group
Thirteen former 3* hotels change hands and reinvent themselves as a budget design line. I’ve been thinking about what that might look like.
Lobby, bar, café, restaurant, seminar and fitness area, courtyard and break out area, as well as 100 rooms each at a total of 13 locations needed a new look to compete in the budget design hotel market. The client’s specifications were stringent, fresh and quick to implement.
An overarching design language was developed for the Vienna House Easy brand, whose recognition value brands each hotel as part of the group while leaving enough room for its independent identity. Each house was given a unique location-based CI (cooperation with UTOUP Design) that playfully integrates local features into the interior: The skyline of the location as carpet pattern, city maps as wall decoration in the lobby or local sights as picture motifs in the rooms give each house its personal touch.
In addition to the holistic redesign of all rooms, the public areas (matched to inventory, budget and timing) were also restructured, expanded and radically transformed in their material and color aesthetics.
The renovation was followed by a 4-star categorization of all hotels. The success also had an impact on the competition – hotels in Berlin, Leipzig and Raunheim have joined the new brand.
